This listing is for BRAZILIAN SPINACH (10 CUTTINGS 4" TO 6" TALL) SAMBU AKA SAMBU LETTUCE.

Brazilian Spinach is also known as Poor man's lettuce, Sissoo, Sambu or Samba lettuce is a very hardy, edible, vigorous, perennial ground covering tropical vegetable plant that can also do well in the subtropics. In temperate climates it can be treated as an annual but will often grow throughout the year depending on your conditions.

Although capable of spreading it is not considered invasive because it does not self seed. The plant will grow up to 12 inches tall and if allowed to spread may develop as a creeping ground cover under ideal conditions. This is a spinach that can survive year round providing an ongoing supply of salad greens that can be eaten raw or cooked. It is generally recommended to cook it if you will be eating large amounts of this salad green due to the high oxalate levels that are typical of vegetables of the spinach family.

The leaves have a deep dark green, decorative, bubbly like appearance. They are crunchy, with a mild nutty flavor (in my opinion) and do not have any slimy texture as present in Malabar spinach which I also carry for those who are interested in a large leaf spinach. Sissoo is delicious when chopped up into eggs along with mushrooms and made into an omelette.

The best thing about this salad green is that if you have one cutting you may propagate tons of it by taking more cuttings as it is a very rapid growing plant that seems to grow even faster when cuttings are taken. Growth accelerates when provided a nitrogen rich soil that remains damp at all times. Hence 50% shade is the best option especially when cuttings are first placed in the ground. I find that placing them in a large pot helps to multiply rapid

growth because the moisture content can be more effectively controlled and the pot can be placed in ideal locations to provide semi- shaded conditions. Fertilizers can be added as the plant will benefit but I find that cow manure mixed with a good quality well draining soil is more than adequate to obtain excellent growth. In my experience, once well established, the plant can become more heat tolerant and even somewhat more drought tolerant but always seems to grow best in semi-shade here in Florida. Experimentation in your area may yield slightly different results

If Grown as a ground cover it is recommended to grow them under a shade tree which replicates the tropical habit that the plant is very much adapted to. Initially, a palm frond or shade-cloth may be placed over the young cuttings to ensure that sun does not beat them down until roots are well established. Samba lettuce roots very quickly (sometimes within a 1 to 2 week period) depending on your conditions. The strike rate is almost 100%. I have used cuttings that were as short as 3 inches and still propagated large compact bushes that were up to 12 inches tall and became as wide as 6 to 8 inches in diameter.
