By Dennis Wheatley
London: Hutchinson of London, (1962).
First edition, first printing.
Wraparound jacket art by Robert Graham.
Wheatley was a second Lieutenant in World War I, and in World War II was a member of London Controlling Section which secretly coordinated strategic military deception and cover plans. He wrote many papers for dealing with the Nazi invasion, helped with plans for the Normandy invasion, and was awarded the U.S. Bronze Star for his role in the war effort.
This espionage mystery utilizes his knowledge of international intrigue, adds background flavors from Greek mythology, and drives the narrative with a budding romance during perilous encounters with the enemy.
In this well-plotted thriller, Wheatley is at the top of his writing game.
A 1.5" by 1" piece of the front paste-down end-paper is cut out, where a previous bookstore name sticker probably once resided, corner tips slightly bumped, else very good in black linen with silver embossed titles to the spine; in a very good plus to near fine dust jacket with light rubbing to the flap folds and upper spine edge, and with minor crimps to the corner tips; original 21s. net price to the front inner flap.
