Raising tropical Streptocarpus (or Cape Primrose) from seed is a great indoor project for gardeners and plant enthusiasts.
We are offering seeds from our hand-pollinated plants. The pictures show the parent plants, as well as several of their offspring. Flowers from 3 to 6 cm across are carried on wire-thin stems rising from loose rosettes of velvet-soft, arching leaves. Colours range from white through pale rose and lavender to deep violet, midnight blue, and rich cerise. Some flowers have sharp, ornate markings; others have boldly coloured contrasting centers.
Start seeds now, and you will see flower buds in early summer (5-7 months from sowing). Display your plants outdoors in summer, in a cool, shady spot, or keep them indoors in a window or under lights. A well-tended plant at its peak, usually beginning in early summer, will cascade with blossoms for many weeks, and can go on flowering, at a lesser rate, through autumn and into the darkest days of winter. Streps are easy, rewarding houseplants all year round. We have them sitting in windows on every side of the house, where they flourish in any natural light.
The seeds are very small and a little tricky to handle, but we make sure each packet contains more than the stated number. We also provide a page of instructions to help get your project started.
