"Although the woodland gnome is treated in greatest detail in this volume, other types are also dealt with.  Gnomes, of course, are twilight and night creatures, and because of this we had to conduct our investigations in near or total darkness.  Had we been completely true to our observations, many illustrations in this book would have been painted in blue or dull gray.  To overcome this difficulty and provide an accurate picture of gnome life, the illustrations are colored as if the subjects had been observed in broad daylight."
