Antique C. 1900 Geneva, NY 8th Regiment Company G Volunteer Infantry Uniformed Soldier Holding His Hat Platinotype Photographic Print. Top part of photo missing. It measures 2 3/4"w x 5 1/2".

From the former studio of JE Hale in Canandaigua NY where Susan B Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and other suffragettes and famous Western NY'ers where photographed by the noted photographer before he sold the studio and moved to Geneva. This fixture was found in his long lost store room, sealed off years ago and forgotten until recently discovered.

The 8th briefly returned to federal service in 1898 during the SpanishAmerican War as the 8th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, mustering in by May 19th and mustering out on November 3rd. It did not deploy outside the United States. In 1906 the 8th Infantry Regiment was reorganized and redesignated as the 8th Infantry Battalion. It was reorganized and redesignated 21 January 1908 as the 8th Infantry Regiment. It was then converted and redesignated 23 January 1908 as the 8th Artillery District, Coast Artillery Corps. The platinum / palladium process was invented in the first half of the 19th century but a reliable commercial process was not introduced until the 1880s. It was popular for practical reasons as platinum is very stable so prints do not deteriorate over time. It is a very permanent image, and was highly valued for this reason. The main attraction of platinotype is, however, aesthetic. The process produces wonderfully rich grey-tones and a matte finish due to the print being laid directly on paper without the need for an emulsion. Those characteristics are demonstrated in this wonderful photograph.
