Antique Carte de Visite (CDV) and Tintype Photo Album. It was Christmas Day, 1863, in the thick of the U.S. Civil War, when this beautiful, embossed album with gold lettering inscribed to Mrs. Carrie M. Sweat, was gifted to her in Roxbury, Massachusetts. It featured a leather cover with brass clasps, and die-cut pages for plenty of CDV photos of family and friends. Mrs. Carrie Sweat (maiden name: Brown) was married to Thomas P. Sweat. According to the "National Register of Sons of the American Revolution" (1902) they had a son Augustus Tower Sweat, also of Roxbury. There may have been other sons as well, since there appears to have been two Thomas P. Sweats in Roxbury, one a carpenter and another the assistant inspector of buildings and a city councilman of Ward 2 in 1862 and again in 1864. In the 1868 city directory Mrs. Sweat is listed as a widow, although Thomas P. Sweat is still employed at city hall. There is still work to be done assembling this family tree, but some of the surnames we found in the online listings pertaining to her family are included in this photo album. The album measures 4.5" wide, 6.5" long, and 2.5" thick. It currently contains 37 CDVs and 6 tintypes. Condition: This is an original CDV album, not a copy or reproduction. The album originally contained 49 identified photos, but 6 of them are missing as noted below. Although the album is intact, it has a split extending to the spine near the middle of the album (visible between the photos of the elderly couple.) The front blank page dated and inscribed to Mrs. Sweat from William Searn is loose, and one of the brass locking clasps is missing, although the other one is intact and functional. Finally, there is noticeable edge wear to the cover as shown in our photo.
