PreSchool-Grade 3-In this delightful poem, the heroine makes a series of trades that will impress even the most enterprising young listeners. It all starts when she barters her old dog, Buck, to Farmer Ben for "one fine rooster, one fat hen." She soon has a house full of eggs, which she swaps for a whippoorwill. The rhyme spins a tale of more and more lucrative deals, ranging from a hive of bees to a Chevrolet. When the young woman swaps the car for a racing mare who wins the derby, her fortune is made. She builds a palace with her newfound wealth, but finds that something is lacking. Wandering sadly from one empty room to another, she decides to exchange everything for her beloved Buck. After her whirlwind wheeling and dealing, she realizes that "My faithful friend is slow and lame, but life without him's not the same." Readers will linger over Morley's illustrations, which are enchantingly primitive, intensely colorful, and contain myriad details, both large and small, of expressive animals, clumps of wool that look like popcorn, gumdroplike haystacks, floating musical notes, lots of bumblebees, and a hot-pink Chevy. The fast-paced bartering will keep children glued to the pages, while the story of coming full circle to rediscover a priceless friendship will have wide appeal.
