Out Of Print (OOP) as a stand-alone dvd and only available in pricey sets for the most part. This a Chinese import with bi-lingual packaging. The aspect ratio is not given, so I don't know if it's widescreen or not.
Jet Li stars as the acrobatic, kung-fu-fighting Cantonese real-life folk hero Dr. Wong Fei Hong who was born in 1847. This very popular, historical kung-fu epic set in the 1870s is superior in every way to most of the '70s Chinese period action movies.
China is on the verge of being overrun by foreigners out to make a fortune. When extortionists from Shaho make trouble for local businesses, Wong Fei-hung's city militia is blamed for the damage they cause while battling the criminals. As a result, the militia is taken into custody, prompting Fei-hung (Jet Li) to begin his own campaign against the undesirable elements (local and foreign) taking advantage of the people.
The Shaho gangsters proceed to burn down Po Chi Lam clinic but the act is witnessed by a Jesuit Priest, who offers to testify on Fei-hung's behalf, when Manchu official Commander Man deems the blaze to be the result of triad warfare instigated by Fei-hung and his followers who include Rosamund Kwan as "Aunt Yee".
Unfortunately, the priest is murdered by a man working for Jackson (Jonathan James Isgar), an American scoundrel in league with the Shaho men. After much frustation and death, Fei-hung comes to realize that, like it or not, he and China will have to adapt, in order to fight back succesfully.
In the meantime, another threat arises in the form of penniless kung-fu master "Iron Vest" Yim, who decides that the quickest way to prosperity is to challenge and defeat the regions best fighter: Fei-hung. The highlight is unquestionably the climatic battle between Fei-hung and Yim in a storage facility, which finds the combantants using ladders to battle around and above every inch of the place and its contents.
