What's on this DVD;   USMC in the Pacific

st Film: "Fury in the Pacific". This film is about the overall fight against the mighty Japan war machine from Guadalcanal to Okinawa.  This is an epic view of the terrible outcome of island fighting on both sides.  B/W Run-time 19:41 Min's

nd Film: "Battle for Tarawa".  This the story about the "Battle for Tarawa" that General MacArthur and Admiral Halsey told Admiral Nimitz not to fight.  Admiral Nimitz said that too much planning has been done to cancel the invasion. It became one of the worst decisions made in the war.  Over 1,000 US men died on that island.  Although the US took the island, it was very costly in lives and was, in the end, not needed because of the "Island Hopping" strategy.  Color Run-time 17:38

rd Film: "Battle for the Marianas".  This film is about the closing in on the a series of island called the Marianas. Kind of the half way point in the war.  At this point, the USMC and the US Military had figured out how to win in the Pacific War against the Japanese.  A foot note;  The USAF landed P-47s from the Carrier Manila Bay to help fight the ground war.  B/W Runtime 20:01

th Film: "Battle for Iwo Jima".  This is a great color film of the invasion of Iwo Jima and the terrible battle that followed.  After 3 days, the Marines (and other service men) planted the Flag on top of Mt Suribachi.  The boost to moral was evident throughout the fleet with horns blasting and solders cheering when that flag went up, but Iwo Jima along with Tarawa was a warning of the "HELL in the Pacific" because of determination of the fighting Japanese not to surrender at any cost.  22,000 Japanese died on that island and the US suffered 6,821 dead, and 19,189 wounded.   It took weeks (82 days) to end the fighting at Iwo Jima but the USAF needed the island for the damaged B-29s returning form bombing Japan that could not make it back to the Mariana bases.  Color Run-time 19:08 Min's

th Film: "Okinawa Newsreels".  This a collection of newsreels of the landing, fighting and securing the Japanese island, Okinawa.  94,000 Japanese solders died in that battle and the Americans lost 12,513 dead and 38,916 wounded at Okinawa.  This battle too was very costly in lives for both nations and was the determining factor for the US to use the A-Bomb because it was thought that it would save lives on both sides.  Little did anyone know at that time that this was the last battle of the Pacific War.  Color and B/W Runtime 10:40 Min's

th Film: "Pacific War Newsreels". 1st, Marines on Guadalcanal. 2nd, New Air bases in the Pacific. 3rd,The Capture of Tarawa. 4th, Flag over Iwo Jima. 5th, Japanese Surrender.  B/W Run-time 23:50 Min's
