What's on this DVD: US Navy Early American Cruisers

Early US Navy Cruisers and WW2 US Navy Cruisers! The USS Santa Fe, USS Brooklyn, Savannah, Houston, plus early Armored Cruisers of the 1900's, the USS Maine, Olympia, and Raleigh. We also added Cruiser Seaplanes, the USS Chicago sinking I-Boats, and rare footage of the USS Main re-floated.

This DVD is a collection of US Navy Cruisers up to post WW2. From the 1890’s to 1949, there is a lot of great footage of these amazing ships. Most were about 600 feet long, were very fast, and long range because of the amount of fuel they could carry. There are 2 basic designs, Light Cruisers (6" guns or less) and Heavy Cruisers (larger guns up to 12"). Their only weakness was the lack of heavy armor. We hope you will enjoy this DVD.

1st Film: "A Day Aboard a Cruiser". This was filmed from the 1930's on into WW2. From REVEILLE, to swabbing the deck, to entertainment like rope climbing, Harlem dancing, the "Hog calling contest", to actual gun battles, to bedtime Taps, this is a great piece of Naval history. Runtime 9:34 Min

2nd Film: "Blue Jackets". This film is about early Navy building up its fleet story in the early days of WW2. Part of the film explains how a Cruiser functions. We added 4 minutes of Seaplanes on the cruiser. Another great film. Runtime 12:38 Min

3rd film: "Cruiser Newsreels". Here is a collection of newsreels on US Navy Cruisers during WW2. 1st - USS Savannah bombed off the coast of Italy while in action, 2nd - Launching of the USS Atlantis and San Juan, 3rd - Cruiser seaplanes aid Atlantic Convoy, 4th - Navy Grows-USS Springfield, 5th - War in the Pacific, 6th - War in the South Pacific where an Australian cruiser is sunk, 7th - USS Boise receives Medals, 8th - USS San Francisco receives medals, 9th - USS Biloxi and Astoria Launched, 10th - Latest films in the Pacific-Cruisers supporting shore landings, 11th - Air Sea Battles at Rabaul, 12th - Dry-docking of a Cruiser, 12th - Typhoon-USS Pittsburgh looses her bow and survives, 13th - USS Chicago Sinks Japans I-boat submarines off of Hawaii. Great stuff! Runtime 23:06 Min

4th Film: "Rust and Mothballed". This film is technical and what some may consider boring. It’s mostly about the USS Brooklyn being mothballed and protected by the Navy's Rust inhibitors. Has great footage of the inside of a Cruiser if you are interested in that type of information. Runtime 14:18 Min

5th Film: "Night Battle of the Empress Augusta Bay". This is the technical story of one of the most famous night battles between the Japanese Navy and the US Navy Fleet. This was an all out brawl between USN Cruisers and Destroyers vs the Japanese Cruisers and Destroyers off the shores of Bougainville in 1943. The fight was over the Marines landing at Bougainville and the Japanese wanted to destroy them. The USN won this amazing fight mostly because of RADAR! We included the Newsreel of the day with this film. Runtime 40:06 Min

6th Film: "Remember the Maine". This is a bonus film by us featuring some footage of early 1900 US Cruisers. The USS Maine, The USS Olympia, The USS Raleigh, The USS Texas, it was filmed by Edison. The footage is of these ships following the Spanish American War. We added more photos and clips to these films to bring a more complete visual to these ships. For most of us, this was a long time ago. We also found and added some footage of the USS Maine re-floated after it sunk. Very RARE! Runtime 15:08 Min
