Cairo by Gorham Sterling Silver Sugar Spoon Mixed Metals 6 1/4" Aesthetic BirdItem Description
Cairo by Gorham
Aesthetic sterling Silver Sugar Spoon with applied bird in flight and applied silver sand, 6 1/4", with mixed metals design in the exceedingly rare pattern Cairo by Gorham, circa 1880. It is not monogrammed and is in excellent vintage condition - there a few minor dents in the bowl, as shown in photos. Museum quality.
Among the most exciting and innovative periods in American silversmithing are the years between 1867 and 1887, a period of creativity in form inspired by the influence of the Aesthetic design movement and the growing interest in all things Japanese that permeated the American consciousness in the late 19th century.
It is made of sterling with inlaid gold and copper. Cairo displays a rare technique of mixed metals on silver, a centuries old technique employed by Japanese sword makers. Because mixed-metal applications were prohibited by European assay laws, Gorham gained an edge over the French and English silversmiths at that time.
