COVER: These seagoing cockleshells are Viking ships --or at least were intended as such by the twelfth-century English artist who painted them. The miniature comes from a manuscript called "The Miracles of St. Edmund," which includes a description of the Viking invasion of England in the ninth century, and an enumeration of their wartime atrocities. An article about these rough customers begins on page 64. Among the illustrations accompanying it are other miniatures from the same manuscript.
