Description

This is a stunning pair of Victorian era layover pillow shams or covers.
Set of two.
These are Euro size. They are laid over a Euro size pillow. (there is no envelope or backing.)
Approx 30" x 30"
Silk satin in a rich wine or burgundy purple.
Handmade bobbin lace has a star motif, and is done in linen thread.
The lace is around the edge, and also insertion.
In the center is a beautifully worked "C" mongram, surrounded by a floral spray, with wheat, a daisy, forget me nots, and a rose bud.
The daisy is done in chenille, and the rest are in silk. The workmanship is very fine, in satin stitch, outline stitch, and lots of tiny french knots.
I believe these were probably a trousseau item, or possibly a wedding gift. The flowers are symbolic:
The wheat symbolizes fertility and bounty.
The forget me nots represent true love.
The daisy represents motherhood and new beginnings.
The rosebud symbolizes the journey of life.
There is an underlayment foundation of linen.
All the assembly is hand stitching.
So elegant and refined!
A charming find, and so beautiful. Victorian in every respect. These are museum worthy.
They fit perfectly on my Queen bed, but I think they would be perfect on a full size bed, also.
Remarkably fine condition. The only issue to note is numerous tiny holes on the linen backing.
Still sound, sturdy, and usable.
From a smoke free home.
