Maalox syrup is a medicine containing locally acting antacids. They work by neutralizing the acids secreted by the stomach. It is indicated in adults (from 15 years) in heartburn and acid reflux. Reserved for adults.
Antacids based on aluminum and magnesium salts are contact antacids; they decrease the degree of acidity of the gastric secretion, by their buffering capacity and by direct neutralization of the hydrochloric acid present in the stomach.
Among the different products of this class
- Aluminum hydroxide has a significant and prolonged neutralizing power; it can cause constipation and phosphorous depletion, by uptake of food phosphates.
- Magnesium hydroxide is a short-acting, short-acting antacid; it can cause diarrhea.
The combination of magnesium and aluminum derivatives is intended to avoid effects on intestinal transit and to add their topical and antacid actions.
