ABOUT THIS BOOK: For any artist who works with Biblical motifs, the space in a church is the space where these works of the creative artist belong. I have worked with Christian art in a host of medieval and modern churches. But I have also witnessed and participated in the construction of churches from the ground up, which is the case with Christ Chapel at Cornerstone University which was finished in 2015 and dedicated on September 14th of the same year. This project was ideal for me: from the outset, my wife, Maja Lisa Engelhardt, and I became creative partners with the architect, the University president and employees, and the generous sponsors who made the entire project possible. Cornerstone University provided a large studio space over a 12 month span in which my wife and I, along with three assistants, and a very helpful secretary, could work freely. The design consisted of four monumental glass windowpanes, each measuring 26.3 x 18.1 feet. For the best effects of stained glass decoration in large church spaces, it is ideal that the windowpanes are the only source of light. When that is the case, I, as musician, can control the tonality and play of the light. And I can also work with a whole range of colors, which in this case approaches the heavenly light of the rainbow. Three of the windowpanes are decorated in the primary colors, red, yellow, and blue, while the fourth contains the complementary colors, green, violet, and orange. As is evident, my decorative work in the new chapel consists of the glass mosaics while my wife has created a gilded bronze cross. The glass was blown by hand in France at the Saint Just factory not far from Lyon. This is one of the last factories in the world that still manufactures glass according to a centuries old tradition. The factory itself has existed for 300 years. - Peter Brandes
