Vintage Richard Petty NASCAR 43 Winston Motor Sports 20th Anniversary Coffee Mug

This is a vintage unused new with tag coffee mug, circa 1991, featuring 7 time Winston cup winner, Richard Lee Petty #43 on the front and Winston Motor Sports 20th Anniversary on the back.  The cup has some wear to the gold trim from storage, but still bears the original manufacturer's papre sticker on the bottom that says Hunter Mfg Group, Lexington KY.  This mug would probably age to 1991 as it is a commorative souvenir of Winston Motor Sports' 20th Anniversary which was created in 1971.  The cup measures 3-1/2 inches tall by 3-1/2 inches in diameter and holds 12 ounces.

Nicknamed "The King",  Petty is a former NASCAR driver who raced in the Strictly Stock/Grand National Era and the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.  He won the NASCAR Championship seven times (Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson are the only other drivers to accomplish this feat), winning a record 200 races during his career, winning the Daytona 500 a record seven times, and winning a record 27 races (10 of them consecutively) in the 1967 season alone.  Statistically, he is the most accomplished driver in the historyof the sport and is one of the most respected figures in motorsports as a whole.  He also collected a record number of poles (127) and over 700 Top 10 finishes in his 1,184 starts, including 513 consecutive starts from 1971–1989.  Petty was the only driver to ever win in his 500th race start, until Matt Kenseth joined him in 2013. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2010

The Winston cup was sponsored by R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company cigarette brand Winston.  In 1971, the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act banned television advertising of cigarettes.  As a result, tobacco companies began to sponsor sporting events as a way to spend their excess advertising dollars and to circumvent the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act's ban on television advertising.
