The 13th New Jersey Infantry was one of sixteen state regiments raised in the of 1862, when the 11th through 15th regiments were enlisted for three service and the 21st through 31st regiments signed up for nine months' The 13th was mustered in at its training camp, Camp Frelinghuysen in on August 25, 1862, with a strength of 38 officers and 899 men. It saw action less than a month later at the bloody battle of Antietam, where it in the XII Corps and suffered 101 casualties. The 13th missed the battle Fredericksburg, but was then heavily engaged at Chancellorsville (141 ) and Gettysburg (19 casualties). In September 1863 the regiment was West to aid in the relief of Chattanooga. Now a part of the XX the 13th fought in the Atlanta Campaign, the March to the Sea, and the Campaign. The unit was mustered out at Washington D.C. on June 8, when its newer recruits were transferred to the 33rd regiment. Altogether officers and men saw service in the 13th during the war. The regiment lost of its members killed by battle and disease, a total that was not high enough merit inclusion in William F. Fox's list of 300 "Fighting Regiments". The nevertheless had a war record to be proud of, fighting with distinction in the Eastern and Western theaters. 'die 13th was commanded for most of the war by its original colonel, Ezra A. . The author of this book, Samuel Toombs, served as a private in the throughout the entire war, and later became historian of the unit's veterans' on.
