Hopi HOOP DANCER Kachina Doll, Hand Carved 11" Katsina Sculpture, Milton Howard
This magnificent Hopi Indian Hoop Dancer Kachina (katsina) Doll was hand carved by Hopi master kachina carver Milton Howard.
This Hoop Dancer Kachina is superb in detail, from the fine lines of the feather work to the hand carved hoops. The time, effort, and talent is evident with every stroke of this carving. Milton uses stain to bring out the natural grain of the traditional cottonwood root and paint to enhance and show more detail. He takes the time and patience it demands to carve the remarkably small lines and details entirely from wood.
The young dancer wears a bone breastplate with a turquoise dangle. He wears knee bells with bell drags on his belt. His colorful arm bands complement the headband and hair roach. He dances within another hoop. This Hopi Indian Hoop Dancer Kachina Doll is about 11" tall, including base, by 14-1/2" wide. Labeled Hoop Dancer and signed - M. Howard. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
* Milton Howard, master kachina doll carver, was born on Feb. 8, 1964 in Tuba City, Arizona on the Navajo-Hopi reservation. His father, also a kachina carver, is from the Third Mesa area and his mother is from the Rocky Ridge area. He is married and has three children. He took up carving as a young boy, learning from other members of his family, but he was not serious about it until he was living in Albuquerque, NM in his early twenties, going to school to be an electrician and carving with his cousins, Jerry and Dan Bert, in his free time. He sold his dolls to his classmates, carving kachinas for orders only. At about 30 years of age he made the decision to start carving full time. His art is now found in the finest galleries around the world and because his work is extraordinary and his prices are so reasonable, many serious collectors have obtained his dolls. The intricate details symbolize a lot of his beliefs, and what he has come to know as very sacred and divine to his culture. * THIS IS A SPECTACULAR HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE HOOP DANCER KACHINA TO ADD TO YOUR NATIVE AMERICAN KACHINA COLLECTION!
A MUSEUM QUALITY HEIRLOOM TO PASS DOWN THROUGH THE GENERATIONS!
* The Kachina doll is given in hopes of abundance and health as well as for education. The Hopis were the original carvers, using a single piece of cottonwood root. The Navajo began carving in their own creative way, adding feathers, fur and leather to their creations. There are over 350 Kachina dolls, each with its own attributes. *
