Source info 07/30/2007 4:56 PM ET BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox today announced that one of the team's greatest legends, Hall of Famer Bobby Doerr, will be honored prior to the game with the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday, August 2. Thursday will be the 60th anniversary of the first Bobby Doerr Day at Fenway Park. On August 2, 1947, the Red Sox second baseman was presented with several gifts by the team and fans prior to Boston's game with the Detroit Tigers. "I hope I can stay here another 50 years," Doerr said on that occasion. At that time, he was in the tenth season of an illustrious 14-year career with the Red Sox.Three of Doerr's teammates from that 1947 club, shortstop Johnny Pesky, outfielder Dom DiMaggio, and pitcher Dave Ferriss, are scheduled to participate in Thursday's ceremony. Maureen Cronin, the daughter of the late Hall of Famer Joe Cronin, who managed the Red Sox from 1935-47, is also expected to attend. In addition, Doerr will throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Thursday. Doerr, who is coming to Boston after attending the 2007 National Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony this past weekend in Cooperstown, New York, batted .288 with 223 home runs and 1247 RBI with Boston from 1937-44 and 1946-51. He was a nine-time American League All-Star and ranks among the top six all-time in 11 different Red Sox batting categories. Doerr was later a major league coach for the Red Sox from 1967-69. The 89-year-old Doerr was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986 and was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 1995.
