Vintage Goliath Beetle Illustration

If you love bugs, you'll love this illustration of a Chief Goliath Beetle (Goliathus cacicus), drawn by French botanist and geologist, Charles Dessalines D'Orbigny. It was for an edition of the 1892 Dictionnaire Universel D'histoire Naturelle.

These huge beetles are only found in Africa, where they're often kept as pets, although sadly they only have a lifespan of 3-6 months.

It's one of the strongest insects in the world, can grow up to 5 inches in length, move over 800 times its own bodyweight and can climb anything, thanks to very sharp claws. It can also fly at 6 mph but causes no harm as it only feeds on rotting vegetation so cause no harm.
