COVER: The Hostage Deal. Special Report: The Presidency: An Impossible Job?
Cover: Photo by Reza-Sipa-Black Star. Mezzotint by Martin J. Weber Studio.
TOP OF THE WEEK:
El Salvador's `Final Offensive' El Salvador slipped into civil war last week as the left launched its "final offensive," One cameraman was killed covering the fighting, and three photographers-including Olivier Rebbot (below) and John Hoagland (right), on assignment for NEWSWEEK-were wounded. Page 53.
COUNTDOWN TO FREEDOM: Itt the very last days of his Administration, Jimmy Carter suddenly was given a last chance to settle the crisis that had helped to scuttle his Presidency. Concluding that the 52 American hostages had become a liability, Iran began to bargain in earnest on a deal to set them free. For both sides, the challenge was to reach agreement before the dawning of the Reagan Administration. As the week ended, a few final details of the hostage deal still were being negotiated with the help of Algerian intermediaries. But already preparations were being made for a joyous and long-awaited homecoming. Page 20.
THE SUPER SHOWDOWN: On Super Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles -a team with conventional credentials- will face a coalition of the unloved and unwanted. Led by the once scorned Jim Plunkett (above), the Oakland Raiders are a bizarre entry in the Super Bowl. Page 82.
THE TOUGHEST JOB: In a ceremony full of hope and high expectation, Ronald Reagan takes his oath this week as America's 40th President. But the office he inherits from Jimmy Carter comes burdened with hard problems and a twenty-year record of disappointment in dealing with them. NEWSWEEK'S preview of the Inaugural and the birth of a new government is accompanied by a twelve-page special report on the battered state of the Presidency-and a talk with Reagan on how he thinks he can make it work. Page 30.
