This is a review I found on-line of this book:

"he crater was a first ever military achievement that highest commanders saw no chance of completing. In reality, one man's idea became a reality. The complete war-ending outcome that was anticipated by the men that did the digging of the tunnel was not reached. That fault was beyond their ability to change. The digging, the blast, and the explosion caused creator accomplished beyond all successful expectations.

The lack of follow-through and taking the town of Petersburg, eventually what would have led to almost an immediate end to the Civil War, was largely due to poor officer decisions and leadership. Even cowardice! Credit for Confederate success in retaking the location is given as well as the truth about who should have taken the responsibility for the failure on the Union side.

It's a written handed-down first-hand account of the battle and the work of the miners prior to the detonation which created the crater. Includes 15 illustrations, some taken from drawings created at the battle scene. A candid detailed look at one battle near war's end. A quick read not to be missed by all Civil War enthusiasts."
