The book of Job begins with a prologue (Job 1-2), which describes a wager between The Satan and God, in which Satan (the adversary) tells Hashem that Job–a particularly pious man–will abandon his piety and curse God if all his wealth and well-being are taken away. Job is a righteous, wealthy and successful man, yet God allows Satan to bring upon Job almost unbearable calamities. His children and his wealth are all taken from him, and he is wracked with suffering.
