The casino first opened in 1978 as the Park Tahoe, built by Park Cattle Co. Caesars World took over the next year in 1979 under a 25-year lease, with options to extend it another 50 years. Caesars agreed to spend $40 million to complete construction of the hotel portion of the property, which was renamed as Caesars Tahoe Palace and later simply Caesars Tahoe. In line with the Caesars name, the property was remodeled with a Roman theme.
The hotel was known for its entertainment offerings, over the years playing host to Dean Martin, Cher, Mac Davis and Tony Bennett. Celebrities like Michael Jordan, Randy Quaid, and Kenny Rogers would play in the casino, and it was also home to title championship fights. Caesars was also the host hotel and title sponsor of the American Century Championship golf games at nearby Edgewood Golf course until 2004. Caesars sold the resort in 2005 to avoid anti trust issues from the Caesars/Harrahs merger. After a number of name changes, the casino is currently named Bally's Tahoe.
