Mod Retro Edvins Strautmanis Abstract Painting Oil on Board 7"x 9" Listed Artist. Signed in pencil on back of the wooden board E. Strautmanis '79. Edvins Strautmanis (1933-1992) was a Latvian born, American artist who absorbed the ideas and aesthetics of Abstract Expression—and then took them to a whole new level of fiery vigor in his own works. Like Jackson Pollock, he laid his generous expanses of canvas on the ground and threw his entire body into working on them. Like Franz Kline, he incorporated broad, calligraphic brushstrokes into his compositions. But unlike his artistic peers, Strautmanis made paintings that possessed an almost violent, explosive charge, tempered only by his exquisite sense of color, which he used with richness and nuance. Terms like “engulfing” or “overwhelming” are perhaps more accurate than “large-scale” in conveying the size and force of his compositions.

The board measures 7.25" x 9"25, frame measures 8 3/8" x 10 3/8". Very good  original condition from a large private collection. A little dirty, soiled from storage, it could use a cleaning. A wonderful and rare find.
