Wine coaster woodturned small dish handmade on the lathe using pieces of repurposed Maple Burl from the Finger Lakes then embedded in epoxy resin with yellow iridescent mica. A wood burl happens due to irregular tree grain pattern growth due to some kind of stress. The tree’s grain grows abnormally, twisting and interlocking with itself. During this process, the wood formed swirling grain patterns.
The finish is first done on the lathe with a mixture of shellac and boiled linseed oil using a friction polish technique to provide a light glossy appearance and then a thin coat of polyurethane is applied for durability. The interior is not made to hold water and this is rather recommended for object, fruit or display but not overly wet item.
Each piece is custom designed in term of shape and wood pattern with each listing being unique and to be removed when sold, making it truly one of a kind.
The little imperfection of the wood and of its natural grain, which I am trying to show as much as possible through the different pictures displayed, is what is giving character to this piece. And I am doing my best to describe and show this piece (and feel free to contact me if you would like any more information or pictures) but if this piece when received does not meet your expectations, then please let me know and return it for refund or replacement
