This vintage original pressbook measures 9.5 x 12 in. when closed and consists of 16 interior pages in addition to the front and back covers. The front was designed to function as the front of the mailing envelope, as it includes an "address" area to which this pressbook would have been mailed. It opens to reveal beautiful 2-color images of both styles of the original three-sheet and 24-sheet posters that were created to advertise this film. The interior 16 pages, which are printed on 11x17 paper and stapled together, are intact as a group but have separated from the outer covers. They consists of various ads and ideas for theater exhibitors to use to publicize this film including selling the film by a "love angle," "youth angle" and "partner angle." Pages 10 and 11 depicts the film's complete set of 8 11x14 in. lobby cards as well as both styles of half-sheet (or 22x28) posters. These two pages are printed on one 11x17 sheet which you can pull down to reveal what is 4 separate sections of various illustrated ads that could be used for publication in newspapers and magazines.
After this 16-page section is the original "Order Blank" form on light blue stock that theater owners would complete and return to order the various posters, lobby cards and other advertising materials to display at their theaters for the showing of this film. Behind this are 7 pages that are perforated along the top with various "press stories" and cuts to publicize the film. Behind this section is on page printed on tan stock that folds out and opens up to reveal two stories" "Fathers and Sons Made 'Sorrell and Son'" and "Mary [Pickford] and Doug [Fairbanks] Characters in Warwick Deeping Novel," which includes images of Pickford and Fairbanks with Herbert Brenon, the film's director, looking at a copy of Deeping's novel. The back cover actually opens up to reveal a second page on thick stock which advertises the purchase of "heralds" to advertise this film and includes an actual example of the herald (which is usually missing from most pressbooks since heralds are of value as collectibles in their own right) which has been tipped-in and affixed to this page This page then opens to reveal a page that depicts 2-color images of both styles of one-sheet posters as well as the film's gigantic six-sheet poster and window card. The back cover trumpets United Artists and lists their then-current major stars.
The front and back covers have split approximately 3/4 of the length down the spine but are still intact. As previously noted, the interior 16-page section is stapled together as one section but it has come loose from the main staples along the spine of the covers. The 2-page foldout back cover has split down the bottom half and has a 0.75 in. and 0.5 in. horizontal tear at the center. There are no others tears to the outer covers, nor do they have any stains, writing or other flaws. All of the interior pages, order form and original herald are all in fine condition.
