Jack Dempsey, one of the most important cultural figures in America in the 1920s, was an icon in the boxing world and remains one of the most recognizable figures in the sport to this day. His prominence as the World Heavy Weight Champion gained him recognition and fame across the world, often fighting under the nickname Kid Blackie early in his career before fighting under his given name starting in 1914. Dempsey came from a humble background before finding fame and acclaim with his boxing career. By the time this photograph was taken, Dempsey had defended his title for years and had created a celebrity career that included starring in a Hollywood film.
While he retired from professional boxing in the following year, he continued to fight in exhibition matches, remain in the public eye, and pursue philanthropic pursuits. Dempsey would later publish an autobiography and a book on his theories for boxing and why he had found such success in his illustrious career. Dempsey was also responsible for pioneering the live television broadcast of sports, particularly boxing, which contributed to the sports' popularity during the twentieth century.
