Concord is the most famous American grape, described by Horace Greeley as "the grape for the millions" with vigorous, hardy and productive vines that produce medium-sized clusters bearing large blue-black berries. Concord grapes are tough skinned, flavorful and highly aromatic - an all purpose grape used to make grape jelly, juice, and grape flavored soft drinks. Concord is used for kosher wines and as a varietal or blender for sweet wines.

Concord grapes are a popular and delicious variety of grape that is perfect for making jams, jellies, and juices. The dark purple grapes are bursting with flavor and are easy to grow in most climates. If you’re looking for a tasty and versatile grape to plant in your garden, then Concord grapes are the perfect choice. Keep reading for planting instructions and tips for growing a bountiful crop of these delectable fruits.

To successfully plant Concord grapes, you’ll need a sunny spot in your garden or yard that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. The soil should be well-drained and rich in organic matter, such as compost or manure. Before planting, it’s important to test the soil’s pH level to ensure it is between 6.0 and 7.0. If you need to amend the soil, you can add lime or sulfur to adjust the pH.

Concord grapes are usually planted in late winter or early spring, depending on your climate. Plant the grapes about 8 feet apart in rows that are 10-15 feet apart. Dig a hole for each plant that is about twice as deep and wide as the root ball. Place the root ball in the hole and backfill the soil, gently packing it down as you go. Water the plants well and mulch around the base to help retain moisture.

Once established, Concord grapes require minimal maintenance. Water the plants regularly, especially during periods of drought, as grapes need plenty of water to produce a good crop. Prune the plants in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth and to keep the plants healthy. Provide the plants with a balanced fertilizer in the spring and again in the summer.

With proper care, you can expect to harvest a delicious crop of Concord grapes in late summer or early fall. The grapes are ready to pick when they are deep purple and easily slip off the vine when gently tugged. Enjoy your harvest fresh, or use the grapes to make jams, jellies, and juices.

Planting Concord grapes is a great way to add a delicious and versatile fruit to your garden. With the right soil, sun, and water, you can enjoy a bounty of these sweet and juicy grapes in no time.
