This is a beautiful pre-owned beaded shank Sterling Silver engraved pleasure bit with a hinged snaffle bit mouthpiece. The bit is marked MAHEU on the inside left cheek for the maker Ray Maheu of Pawling, New York. The hinged snaffle mouth offers the perfect transition for a green horse to a leveraged bit. The sweet iron mouthpiece has copper inlays on the back side which encourages salivation for a soft mouth.
The bit features swept back shanks that are embellished with shiny silver colored dots and engraved silver where the mouthpiece is attached. The slightly swept back shanks makes this a great first bit to transition from the direct rein snaffle bit. This bit has 8-1/2 inch long cheeks, with a 3-1/2 purchase for a 2.42 to one leverage ratio. The hinged snaffle mouthpiece measures 5 inches wide by 3/8 inches in diameter. The bit weighs in at 14.9 ounces and demonstrates perfect balance. This is a style that is very difficult to find made by master bit maker Ray Maheu.
