Johann August Sutter (originally: Suter) (February 28, 1803, Bern/Switzerland - June 18, 1880, Washington D.C.), migrated in 1834 to California and colonized 1839 a large region he called New Helvetia in the Sacramento Valley. When gold was found on his land in 1848, he was ruined by the chaos of the Gold Rush.
This is one of our favorite roses. We decided nonetheless to relegate our mother plant (from lack of room out front where it was for years) to the back 40 in a very shady spot. Nonetheless, despite the shade and lack of regular watering, it thrives disease-free and with lovely blooms all season long. It is incredibly disease-free with beautiful foliage as well as very large, fragrant wonderful, long-lasting blooms profusely covering the plant. Julia Child Sutter Gold and Crimson Glory are all up there in the race for the perfect Hybrid Tea Rose.
