Knobby bark decorates this world's smallest elm. Pruning tips of branches will help fill out this tree that grows only about an inch or two annually. Naturally congested growth and a stocky trunk give this small tree the appearance of age, a quality valued in miniature landscapes, railroad gardens and bonsai. The plant develops thick, corky bark with age. Site it in full to partial sun with moist, well-drained soil. Don’t over water in winter, and don’t let it dry out or scorch in intense summer sun. Allow to remain cold (below 40F) but above freezing, for winter.
