Until the 1965 release of the film THE IPCRESS FILE, starring MICHAEL CAINE, the impatient, bespectacled protagonist of this series of spy novels by British author LEN DEIGHTON did not have a name . It was left to MICHAEL CAINE to dub him "HARRY" as the dullest first name he'd ever heard, and the producer decided that "PALMER" was also equally dull. And so the series of five films featuring actor MICHAEL CAINE as the British secret agent, "HARRY PALMER" was dubbed -- and the series of novels by LEN DEIGHTON became the "HARRY PALMER" series, of which this is the seventh, following THE IPCRESS FILE; HORSE UNDER WATER ; FUNERAL IN BERLIN ; BiLLION-DOLLAR BRAIN ; AN EXPENSIVE PLACE TO DIE ; and SPY STORY.
Up until this seventh book in the series, the author had been very stingy regarding the mysterious past of the "HARRY PALMER" character: readers were aware that "HARRY PALMER" had served (in some military capacity) during World War II, and the school that he had attended as a youth -- but that was roughly the extent of "Palmer's" history. So it was a major surprise to begin reading YESTERDAY'S SPY, and to have so much revealed about "Harry's" military career as an agent during World War II -- and, thus, YESTERDAY'S SPY was well worth the wait!
