This one-of-a-kind color separation (made up of five layers - four of acetate and one of paper) features the cover to Johan Hex #12 (released by DC Comics, March 1978). It features the pencils and inks of Jim Starlin. It includes five layers- the top four are acetate - a copy of the black and white line artwork, then a blue layer, then red, then yellow, and, finally, a white paper (instead of acetate) background layer. While not actually hand-drawn artwork, this 40+ year old color separation is still a one-of-a-kind item. It is in excellent condition overall (has minor wear - to be expected, given that it was used in the production process of the comic, but still displays very nicely) and will be shipped with the utmost care. It is signed by Starlin. Please note- the signature is real. It is the actual, hand-signed signature of Starlin. it is not a pre-printed image on the color separation.
About Color Separations:
Before the advent of computers, the coloring of comic books (and, for that matter, magazines, newspapers, etc., regardless of however many colors appeared to the eye, were made up of tiny dots of four colors - yellow, blue (cyan), red (magenta) and black. Combined with the white of the paper and the way the human brain perceives the image, a wide variety of colors appear. The color separation (or color proof) was created to show the publisher what the actual, printed version of the comic would ultimately look like (so, if any corrections were required, they would be caught before the books went to press).
