The hollow-stemmed SQUAW CABBAGE is a spectacular plant of the Mojave Desert highlands. In the Spring, acres of these stately flowers are seen on open flatlands above 2000 feet. This particular scene was taken in that area of Boron Valley being developed as California City. Al- though frequently known as "DESERT CANDLES" the plants originally obtained the name of SQUAW CABBAGE because Indian squaws made a palatable stew by boiling the stems with meat.
