1948 Foreign Service Magazine - VFW Veterans of Foreign Wars - February issue. "Foreign Service" was the official publication of the "Veterans of Foreign Wars" (VFW) for decades. This issue of "Foreign Service" for February 1948. Features in this issue include the following: (a) Murphy's Platoon (b) Russia's Lust for Loot (c) Our National Cemetery Scandal (d) A Sharecropper's Dream Comes True (e) Veterans and the High Cost of Living (f) and more. There are reports from various VFW chapters throughout the nation and information about VFW members; cartoons and jokes ; member death notices; and some great period advertising. This issue measures appx 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches and has 48 content pages. The cover and content pages are a very low-grade pulp paperstock (paper was still short after World War II). It is in overall fair-good condition for something now approaching 75 years old. A great article for not only the veteran or VFW member but for historical purposes, also. First published in November, 1904 for a predecessor organization named "American Veterans of Foreign Service", the last issue was distributed in December, 1950, when the name of the journal was changed to "VFW Magazine". From its beginnings as a four-page newsletter, the magazine evolved into a publication counted among the top 60 publications in terms of circulation in the United States. For more than 10 decades -- through five lengthy wars and numerous smaller campaigns -- these magazines have taken up the battle on behalf of war veterans. From travel pay to a bonus to the GI Bill to VA health care, the magazines have spoken for the organization on matters of critical importance. They also contain historical articles about wars and the participants, as well as cartoons, fiction and theme advertising.
