CIRCA 1917, CONNECTICUT HOME GUARD, BRASS SHIELD, INSIGNIA, UNCOMMON

This is either a cap or collar insignia for the Connecticut Home Guard (CHG).  Brass shield with the initials C.H.G. Two retention prongs were soldered on the reverse. Correct solder for this time period. Uncommon.

During the run-up to World War I, there was fear among US citizens of spies and other threats to their homeland, even perceived threats from recent immigrants. Over 55% of the arms and ammunition used by the US military were manufactured in Connecticut, leading to many elected state officials being worried about possible attack or sabotage.  The Connecticut Home Guard was established in March 1917 to protect the railroads, factories, businesses and bridges in Connecticut.  The Connecticut Home Guard also helped in fundraising and recruiting for the military.
