U.S. WATERVLIET ARSENAL, MODEL 1881, CARTRIDGE BOX, 5th PATTERN, UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY

This is the Cadet Pattern box. U.S. Model 1881 Watervliet Arsenal Cadet McKeever type cartridge box, as used by cadets at West Point. Caliber 45-70. With twin, slotted brass buckles secured at their base by stitched leather chapes. Above them, and unique to the Cadet McKeever, are two horizontal leather loops, which serve to secure the cloth shoulder strap and keep the box hanging against the body. Has the soft canvas cartridge loops and bellows. Markings; Watervliet Arsenal on left side of box body, and “Co. A, No 26" (a cadet unit mark probably applied at West Point). Used with the US Model 1873 Rifle or Carbine.  The leather is firm and pliable.  Strong stitching. Overall, very nice and smooth finish with some minor cracking and surface wear on the retention strap, some minor surface cracking on the front, and some minor wear on some areas. The 20 interior canvas cartridge pockets are in nice condition.  They are soft and pliable and not stiff or torn and not stretched out. These will easily hold cartridges. There is the storage compartment for the take-down tool on the right side. Workers at the Watervliet Arsenal demonstrated the ease of producing a bulge in the side of the box to create a pocket for the rifle tool and added a piece of material on the inside to secure it. Overall, a very nice box with very nice leather.
