A large, dramatic sconce from the Aesthetic Movement, 1860-1900. Originally gas, the light was converted to electric at some point, and has been rewired and has a new brass socket. The sconce features a winged griffin on a vertical arm and a dolphin holding the shade ring. The light is brass, bronze and may have had gilt in its original condition. Casting is very good with crisp detail.
Overall the sconce is in good and appealing condition. One tube has a ding/bend as shown in the photos and all the arms aren't perfectly straight, but we don't see these as detracting as much as an indication of 150 years of age. There was one plugged drill hole, hard to see, and very likely from when the light was converted to electric as a means of threading the wire through the tight channel. Wear is consistent with age.
Globe is 6-inch diameter cased opal glass with 3.25-inch fitter. Note: this sconce is also available with an art glass flame globe for an additional $100, listed separately.
