Diplomystus is an extinct genus of freshwater clupeomorph fish that was present in the Eocene period, around 56 to 33.9 million years ago. They are distantly related to modern-day extant herrings, alewives, and sardines, and like them their strongly upturned mouths suggest that they fed in open water rather than being bottom feeders. Diplomystus are often found in association with other Eocene fish from the Green River Formation, particularly the genus Knightia. In fact fossil evidence suggests that Diplomystus preyed upon Knightia!
