Arthur Scott Bailey wrote 40 children's stories from 1915 to 1929. His stories featured characters in the natural environment who were going through the challenges of growing up in their natural world. He wrote in an engaging way and did not oversimplify the writing for children. This story is described as being suitable for 5th grade level.

Tommy Fox journeys through many adventures and misadventures as his mother teaches him how to work on his survival skills. In his endeavors he meets many woodland creatures. He finds that he has to get himself educated enough to help take care of his family when his mother has a little of five new little baby foxes.
