FRONT COVER "COYOTE" BY BILL RATCLIFFE. Photo of the coyote, Canis latrans. The photographer explains: "The coyote is found in all western states, western Canada and Alaska south into Mexico. It is found in every habitat, from the mountains and forest to the desert, but prefers more sparsely wooded and open areas. It is becoming rare in some states because of the persecution by man. Being a conservationist, I would urge their protection and would like to see and hear them more often, though many people do not share my views. I used to hear them in the canyons when I was a boy, but this animal picture here is the only coyote I have seen and heard in the past twelve years. A wonderful experience." 4x5 Burke & James camera; Ektachrome, E-3; f. 16 at I / I ooth sec.; I o" Commercial Ektar lens; shade; electronic flash fill; Weston reading zoo; ASA rating 64.

OPPOSITE PAGE "KAIBAB SQUIRREL" BY WILLIS PETERSON. This busy little fellow is Arizona's very own, his domain being the Kaibab ( pronounced "kie-bab") Forest, north of Grand Canyon. His long white tail is one of his distinguishing features. His formal name is Sciurus haibabensis.
