"A JEWEL IN A CLIFF" BY RAY MANLEY. White House Ruin, in Canyon de Chelly National Monument, is one of Arizona's most spectacular prehistoric cliff dwellings. During months of May, June and July, the sun is very high and does not penetrate far into the cave. Sunlight shines on 1000 foot face of cliff wall from mid-morning to mid-afternoon during summer. Even better light is found in spring and fall through early winter. Tree ring studies of beams takens from this ruin reveal its earliest construction date as 1066 A.D. "De Chelly" is pronounced "day-shay." 5x7 Linhof camera; Ektachrome E3 daylight; f. 18 at I /6 oth sec.; 18 omm Symmar lens; October; mid-morning -- clear sky; ASA rating 5o.

"CORN HARVEST -- CANYON DEL MUERTO" BY RAY MANLEY. Photo taken in Canyon del Muerto. A blind Navajo, age 7o, is still useful to his family, shucking colorful Indian corn after the harvest. The photographer says: "Navajos are friendly and cooperative. If you are an amateur photographer, a half-dollar or more will suffice for model fees. Be sure to give everyone in picture something." Canyon del Muerto means "canyon of the dead." In 1805 a troop of Spanish soldiers, on an expedition to subdue the Navajos, trapped a group of them in a cave in the canyon. Firing from an opposite rim, the Spanish killed 90 Navajo men, 25 women and children, and in addition, captured 3o women, 3o horses and 3o sheep. 5x7 Linhof camera; Daylight Ektachrome; f.18 at I /5 oth sec.; 2 I omm Symmar lens; November; bright afternoon sun.
