Hematite is the mineral form of iron oxide, one of several iron oxides. It is the oldest known iron oxide mineral that has ever formed on Earth. Hematite crystallizes in the rhombohedral lattice system, and it has the same crystal structure as ilmenite and corundum. It is mined as the main ore of iron. Specularite is a variety of Hematite characterized by aggregates of silvery, metallic, specular (‘mirror-like’) hematite flakes or tabular, anhedral crystals.
