THE COVER Among the innumerable "what to do's" that beset conservation in America is what to do about the cougar or mountain lion, alias panther, puma or catamount. Classed as a predator with a bounty on its head for many years in most places, it is now getting more protected status in some. Not everyone is delighted. This prowling cougar was photographed by Stewart Cassidy, Prescott, Ariz., with a 35mm camera and Ektachrome film. For more on the mountain lion controversy, see pages 20-22.
