This is an adorable and rare novelty frog animal stand egg timer with a nodding head. It was manufactured in Japan for the S.S. Kresge Company in Troy, Michigan. The company was renamed the Kmart Corporation in 1977. On the bottom is a label “Made in Japan”. The frog stands approximately 6 inches tall. The glass timer is approximately 3 inches in length. The round base is 1 ¾ inches in diameter. I have not found another one like it in all of my searches.
This 3-minutes egg timer is in the shape of a green frog with bulging eyes and a red mouth turned up in a smile. The frog is made from wood and hand painted. The head is attached with a spring and it “bobbles”. The glass timer is attached in the front and turns. You can hand turn the timer or by turning the knob on the back of the frog you can turn it from there. The sand runs through the timer from side to side, but it does seem to clog up occasionally and needs a little tweak. I wouldn’t trust it to actually work as a 3-minute egg timer.
It is in excellent vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. There are no chips or cracks and the paint is still nice and shiny. It was stored in the original box for years and looks like it was never used.. The box is also in good vintage condition with some minor wear to the cardboard and tears on the top edges (see pics). It still has the original price tag with the yellow label for SSK with a price of $1.54.
This would be a great addition to anyone’s collection of frogs, egg timers, or nodders. It will appeal to many animal lovers.
