How the Other Half Lives. By  JACOB A. RIIS.

A republication of 1901 edition. Mew Preface by Charles A. Madison. 100 photographs from the RIIS collection plus 17 other illustrations. 233 pages. 10" x 7-7/8". Paperbound.

Jacob Riis was one of the very few men who photographed the slums of New York at the turn of the century, when as many as 300,000 people per square miles were crowded into the tenements of New York's Lower East Side. RIIS was one of those immigrants  forced to live in the film and degradation in that place. When he became a police reporter for the New York Tribune, he exposed the shameful conditions. Today he is remembered as a compassionate and effective reformer and a pioneer photo-journalist.

In very good condition. Some dull corners.
