This book is a series of connected sketches of scenes and the people of Maine, based on anecdotes and memories of the region that came down to the author. She was the daughter of Laura Richards, famous for her children's novel CAPTAIN JANUARY (later made into a Shirley Temple movie) and for winning the Pulitzer Prize for a biography of her mother, Julia Ward Howe, who wrote "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". The book is enhanced by full-page photos by Bertrand H. Wentworth. Aside from minor blemishes on the spine and upper page edges, the book appears virtually new. The jacket, which has protected it for the past century, has edge tears, shallow chipping and a small hole on the spine, plus some tape residue/pulling on the front cover; otherwise, this very scarce dj is in reasonable shape with no printing affected.
