Description
This unique, antique/vintage Japanese Fireman’s Jacket belonged to my husband. It was given to him as a gift from my mother, who purchased it in the early 1980’s at the Seattle Art Museum store where she worked. He never wore it, but it had been worn prior to purchase.
The kimono/jacket has a 2.5” wide band encasing the inner edges with white Japanese calligraphy on both sides (sorry, I don’t know what it says); the inside shoulders are lined in soft blue cotton gauze; and the sleeve hems are lined with a light-colored burgundy cotton. The upper rear of the jacket has the fireman insignia, and there are two white horizontal stripes running across the bottom. The chest has an attached bronze/goldish-colored plastic medallion with raised Japanese calligraphy stamped into it, and a sewn-on piece of fabric designating the fireman’s rank.
This vintage fireman’s kimono/jacket is entirely hand-stitched, and most likely a rare garment, especially with the medallion and rank patch.
