This brooch represents in Greek mythology the owl that accompanies Athena the virgin goddess of wisdom. Minerva is her name in Roman Mythology. The bird is often referred to as the “Owl of Athena” or the “Owl of Minerva”. It looks like the image of Athena on the Athena Tetradrachm coin that was minted 431-413 BC and had the wise owl on the reverse side. The coin was used for more than two centuries in the ancient world. Athena is wearing a crested Attic helmet with a visor. It measures approximately 2 ½ inches long and 1 inch tall. I don’t know what the metal is composed, it has not been tested and it is unsigned.
This brooch is in great vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. Please look at the photos as they are part of the description and show the details better than I can describe.
This would be perfect for anyone who enjoys ancient history and Roman and Greek mythology.
